Updated list of Global Beermoney opportunities (+180!) - June 2020

Introduction

The current, and now previous, Beermoney Global list started nearly 5 years ago. It’s been updated and has grown over all that time, but it also became a hassle to keep current. It was time to build a new list from scratch based on my experience in the Beermoney world over all these years and all the contributions all of you have been making in this sub.
The lists consist of opportunities that are available in at least one country that is not the US. This means there are sites which only work in Canada or the UK. There’s sites which are open to the whole world, but this does not mean everyone can really earn something on it. It’s all still very demographic and therefore location dependent. This list should give you a starting point to try out and find what works for you. I’m not using everything myself as I prefer to focus on a few, so not all are tested by me. They are found in this sub, other subreddits and other resources where people claim to have success.
I’ve chosen the format of a simple table with the bare minimum of information to keep things clean. It includes a link, how you earn, personal payment proof if available and sign-up bonus codes if applicable. Some of these bonuses are also one-time use codes specifically made for this sub! For the ones I don’t have payment proof (yet) feel free to provide some as a comment or via modmail so others know it’s legit. I am working on detailed instructions for each method that I personally use which will include things like cashout minimum, cashout options, tips & tricks,... For now I’ve split things up based on the type of earning like passive or mobile. Because of this there’s sometimes an overlap as some are both passive and on mobile or both earning crypto and a GPT (Get Paid To) website.
The lists are obviously not complete so I invite you to keep posting new ones in the sub, as a comment to this post, or in modmail. Especially if you have sites or apps which work for one single specific country I can start building a list, just like I did for The Netherlands and Belgium. If you recognize things which are in fact scams or not worth it let me know as well.

The Netherlands specific
For The Netherlands there are a few very good options next to a bunch of ‘spaarprogramma’s. There ‘spaarprogramma’s are all the same where you receive and click a bunch of e-mails, advertisements, banners,... I advise you to create a separate e-mail address or use a good filter in your inbox as you will be spammed to death. I believe they can be a nice piece of beermoney but they take quite the effort.

Mega-List: Israel's Crimes and Controversies

Updated on 11June 2020, Arranged in Chronological Order
All articles cited are from reliable and trustworthy sources (some may be NSFL):
Use this website to read any paywalled site you might encounter in this list.
Major Incidents:
ONE. Assasination of Jacob Israël de Haan (1924), a Dutch-Jewish diplomat, for attempting to make a peace deal with the Emir of Mecca - his plan was a Palestinian state in a Jordanian federation, the Zionists would drop the Balfour declaration and any claim to a state in exchange for unrestricted immigration. He was assassinated when leaving a synagogue by Avraham Tehomi (who admitted to it much later), on the orders of Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, who later became the 2nd President of Israel:
Wiki, Haaretz, 972mag
TWO. King David Hotel Bombing (1946) where right-wing Zionist terrorists attacked a British HQ located within the hotel killing 91 and injuring 46. The leader of the perpetrators, Manachem Begin became the Prime Minister of Israel in 1977:
Wiki, Haaretz
THREE. Deir Yassin Massacre (1948) where 110 villagers were slaughtered, some members of the perpetrators were at a later time, absorbed into the IDF, one even became PM of Israel:
Wiki, Haaretz, Britannica
FOUR. Document from IDF archives (1948) which after translation states:
"In the villages lying between Nahraiya and Tarshiha there are no foreign troops for the time being. The villages are armed and ready for action1. Your orders are to occupy, kill the men2, destroy and burn down the villages of Kabri, Umm al-Faraj and al-Nahr."
[1] Ilan Pappe notes that the villagers had no proper arms, only for hunting purposes and people who served in the police; without Arab troops that were absent they stood no chance [2] In April 1948, the Intelligence of the Hagana defined men as anyone above the age of 10

FIVE. Palestinian Exodus "Nakba" (1948) was an expulsion of 700,000 Palestinian Arabs from their Homeland during the war and establishment of Israel in May 1948, these includes testimonies of massacres, rape and looting. During and immediately following the state’s creation, Israel expropriated approximately 4,244,776 acres of Palestinian land.

SIX. Assassination of Folke Bernadotte, (1948) UN Mediator for Palestinian Refugees by Israel's Zionist Paramilitary Group, Lehi. The killing was approved by the three-man 'center' of Lehi, one of which, after the assassination, became 7th Prime Minister of Israel (Yitzhak Shamir). No one was convicted for the assassination:

EIGHT. Kafr Qasim Massacre (1956) where Israeli Border Police killed 49 Arabs (19 men, 6 women, 23 children, 1 unborn child) returning home from work during a curfew they were unaware of. Those involved in the massacre were found guilty but were pardoned and released from prison in a single year. The highest ranking official prosecuted for the massacre confessed before his death, that the massacre were planned to ethnically cleanse Israeli Arabs from the region, and that his trial was staged to protect Israeli political and military elites, including Prime Minister Ben Gurion, from taking responsibility for the massacre:
Wiki, Haaretz, 972mag, Medium
NINE. Apollo Affair (1965) an incident where 200-600 pounds of highly enriched uranium disappeared from a Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Highly suspected to have gone to Israel's Nuclear Program particularly given the visit of Rafi Eitan who was under the guise of a chemist but later revealed as an Israeli spy and who was later involved in the Jonathan Pollard incident:

Bernie's Master Plan for 2020 - The Prominent Players & Their Roles [Part 5, 1st Half]

Continued from Part 4
Bernie's Master Plan for 2020The Prominent Players & Their Roles - Part 5, 1st Half
My Introduction to WayOfTheBern. My Political History AKA My Journey to The Revolution. [Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Part 10, Part 11] Now here's ONE MORE of The Prominent Elected Players in Bernie's Master Plan & Their Roles within it. A Big One. So big in fact that she breaks Part 5 into 2 Halves because of Reddit's space limits. Enjoy!
Part 5, 1st Half covers Alexandria's role as Bernie's Shadow. Link to Part 5, 2nd Half covering Alexandria's role as The Leader of The Squad.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez = Bernie's Shadow & The Leader of The Squad► Where do we BEGIN with the Phenomenon now known as AOC? Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from The Bronx, New York City was once upon a time merely one of many young Bernie Sanders supporters during his BREAKTHROUGH 2016 Presidential campaign. She was a graduate of Boston University (cum laude!) who was committed to uplifting & revitalizing her home community in the Bronx. By returning home after college, she wanted to end the Brain Drain that removes stellar people from their communities when they sought work elsewhere. So she created a publishing house called Brook Avenue Press intended to educate children & showcase The Bronx in a positive light. Her commitment to The Bronx comes from her father & his side of the family, Puerto Ricans who had roots in the Bronx going back 3 generations. But the systematic neglect of the region filled with Browns & Blacks had Alexandria's mother & father seek better educational opportunities so Alexandria & her brother could live up to their fullest potential. With help from extended family, Alexandria's family moved to the suburbs of Yorktown Heights.
It was here that Alexandria found herself seeing the Twilight of two worlds with the better opportunities of Yorktown Heights vs. the systematic abandonment her extended family still experienced back home in The Bronx. Not to mention the race & class disparities of the 2 regions with Brown Boricua Alexandria out of place in Yorktown Heights filled with Middle to Upper Class Whites vs. but at home with her people in the Bronx surrounded with Working Class Browns & Blacks (Did they REALLY call Alexandria a Mexican over there in Yorktown? sigh). This Twilight lit a fire in her that spurred this Science Nerd to excel in school (with literal asteroid named after her through high school science project) & one day return to The Bronx as one of its Champions. But after her architect father died in 2008, the family eventually lost the ability to maintain their home in Yorktown Heights due to the housing market crash & difficulties with the probate courts (her father didn't leave a will). This ended up leaving Alexandria working as a waitress & bartender alongside her work in non-profit organizations. She eventually got molasses-stuck in her plan to be a Bronx Champion after Brook Avenue Press failed & wondered if she squandered her potential.
Then Bernie Sanders came along & rejuvenated her passion & hope with his Political Revolution setting her on a course that would change her life forever.
Alexandria's entry to The Bernie Movement in 2015 as one of his supporters went to the next level when she was not allowed to vote for him in the April 2016 New York primary due to some nonsense with the Voter Registration. This stirred her to get DIRECTLY involved as an avid Organizer to his campaign as he valiantly fought off the skullduggery of opponent Hillary Rodham Clinton & the DNC, the Democratic National Committee. After Hillary received her karma by way of Trump on Election Night 2016, Alexandria wanted to get involved someway somehow wherever she could. So she goes cross-country with friends to a pipeline protest at Standing Rock Reservation in frostbite-cold North Dakota. The event was spiritually transformative for her & as soon as she prepared to head home, she suddenly gets a call from a Bernie Movement-derived organization named Brand New Congress: "Do You Want To Run For Congress?" Recognizing how molasses-stuck she was working at the bar & feeling like she had nothing left to lose, she decided to run against all odds.
Bernie Sanders' 2016 call for "young people to get involved in the political process" was not lost on Alexandria as she worked as bartendewaitress by day, U.S. Congressional candidate by night. Brand New Congress merged with similar Bernie Movement-derived organization Justice Democrats as she waged her unlikely underdog campaign against THE FORMIDABLE King of Queens, Joe Crowley—the 4th highest-ranking member of Democratic Party Leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives. A year later on June 26, 2018, THE IMPOSSIBLE: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez LANDSLIDED Joe Crowley by 15 points to even HER OWN surprise! The long-range plan Bernie & NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio put together for New York/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/60202005/GettyImages_984862810.0.jpg) worked & a STAR was born.
Ever since that IMPOSSIBLE upset, AOC has been a KEYSTONE for The Revolution quickly rising to THE VERY TOP of importance within The Movement. Instantly, her Star Power, Political Talent, & All-Around Innovation made her one of THE KEY Players to bring The Revolution to Victory. Her constantly rising profile online & offline gives her an ever-increasing Mass Following that has taken the world by storm in such a short time. Because of this, Young Alexandria, the Youngest Woman Ever Elected to U.S. Congress at age 29 & The Baby of The House, is trusted with MASSIVE responsibility resulting in the TWO Roles she plays in Bernie's Master Plan. The 1st one being Bernie's Shadow & the 2nd one being The Leader of The Squad.

Bernie's Shadow
As Bernie's Shadow, Alexandria serves as THE JUNIOR CHIEF of the entire Revolution. The Little Chief behind The Big Chief, Bernie. Similar to Bernie The Chief, Alexandria helps carry the entire Movement on her back. She is ALSO responsible for all the players within it. If she fails, they fail. If she succeeds, they succeed. So just like Bernie, Junior Chief Alexandria has to be more careful in taking a position than others. While she will always push towards "The Left" whenever possible, she takes on stances that have mass consensus & approval or can build into mass consensus & approval. It's easier to get people on board with the Green New Deal than to go out on a limb challenging AIPAC. Unlike Bernie The Chief, AOC's role as The Junior Chief DOES NOT make her the Centerpoint all other players connect to. Nevertheless, protégé AOC functions much like a Double Bernie/Second Bernie in every other way which is why she is called Bernie's Shadow. I mean, just LOOK at these two! ¡SIMPÁTICO!
Being The Junior Chief, Alexandria is the SECONDARY MESSENGER of The Movement. What she says ALSO becomes emblematic of The Movement's purpose & agenda. And being The Junior Chief, Alexandria is the CO-LEAD BEACON to attract people to The Movement. She is ALSO the mascot as well as the secondary representative to get folks on board. See, for those who can't quite accept the gruff grumpy grandpa with the Brooklyn accent & a heart of gold......there's a cheerful cutie-pie Bronx Boricua with the razzle-dazzle, sass & sizzle to draw in what grandpa cannot. Whether drawn in by The Chief Bernie or The Junior Chief AOC, the goal remains the same. It's all about building THE largest energized Mass of People to overcome any obstacle, any rigging, any sabotage put forth by The Established Order. That's the KEY to the Master Plan's success.
But there's more to AOC's role as Bernie's Shadow than functioning as a Junior version of Bernie as Chief. AOC ALSO becomes a RACE SHAPER in the 2020 Presidential Election... ...both in the Democratic Primaries AND the General Election. The Double Bernie effect between Bernie & AOC as Chief & Junior Chief changes when Bernie & AOC are together vs. when Bernie & AOC are apart. When paired together, you get a BOOST Effect that exponentializes the impact of actions Bernie or AOC would have alone. Powerful solo. MEGA-Powerful together. When separated apart, AOC builds Her OWN Power in Her OWN Right essentially coming out of "Bernie's shadow" so to speak. In his shadow, when together. Building her own power, when solo.
AOC weaves in & out between twinning with Bernie & going solo from Bernie at strategic times in order to shape the outcome of the 2020 Race. You saw it firsthand when AOC separated & hung out with Elizabeth Warren talking about Game of Thrones...AND when AOC united with Bernie to say "No Middle Ground!" & "Too Much For Me!" to Joe Biden at the/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/64694797/1148957129.jpg.0.jpg) end of the Green New Deal Tour. AOC THEN sat in some secret hidden room with Bernie to talk about Usury & Postal Banking hitting Credit Card Biden where it hurts most. She acts as a LURE when apart drawing in clout-chasing candidates trying to get the rub from of her Rapid-Fire Rise. See Elizabeth Warren & Kamala Harris. She acts as a HAMMER when together crushing the prospects of contrary candidates with her Rapid-Rising Power. See Joe Biden & Elizabeth Warren. She dangles her Endorsement Power over the Democratic Field forcing candidates to seek it or oppose it then makes her moves to control or squash Bernie's opponents before she permanently joins Bernie for the Ultimate BOOST Effect. It's like "Wonder Twins Powers Activate!" or DragonBall Z's "Fusion HA!" Bernie & AOC then begin a perpetual mutual elevation that guarantees each other wins their individual races. Bernie for Prez, AOC for 2nd term as Rep. THIS is why Alexandria played coy & withheld her endorsement for Bernie for so long. You like the results?

Twilight's Ultimate Guide to the MLP Fandom (version 3.0)

Hello everypony, Twilight again! Seeing as it has been about two years since my last compiled guide, enough time for the show to finally end, I feel it is time to pull out the old guide, blow the dust off, and revise with some more modern fandom relics on top of all the old ones! Nothing has been removed from the old guide, but a lot has happened in two years, and in light of recent copyright laws being passed, and the takedowns of several World Heritage Videos, I feel a revision is in order. So, without further ado, here is...

Twilight's Ultimate Guide to the MLP Fandom (version 3.0)*

Hello there! For whatever reason, it seems you've stumbled upon this humble guide to the My Little Pony fandom. Perhaps you're a new brony looking to see what the fandom has to offer, or maybe you're an outsider coming to see what all the fuss is about. Or perhaps you're already an experienced member of the fandom, just looking to see if there's anything important you might have missed. Whatever your reason for reading this might be, I hope you'll find this guide enlightening.
A good chunk of this guide is basically just a list of what I consider to be the best original animations, songs, comics, artwork, and stories created by the fandom. It will almost certainly be missing some things, as I definitely can't claim to have seen everything the fandom has to offer, but I'm confident I've covered a good chunk of the more popular works.
Keep in mind that unless otherwise stated, the links posted here make no attempt to avoid spoilers for new members of the fandom. The list itself should be reasonably spoiler-free, but click on one of these links without having seen every season of MLP and all the movies and all bets are off (again, unless otherwise stated). That means if you're viewing this list on Reddit using RES and you're concerned about spoilers, make sure none of the below links are expanded before proceeding. Feel free to check with another member of the brony community if you want to be sure that a particular fan work is spoiler-free before you view it. Anyway, read on (and into the comments!) for a massive list of some of the greatest works in the MLP fandom!
*Version 3.0 Edited and Compiled by u/str8aura with gracious permission of template usage from u/Ajedi32

Animations

The MLP fandom has a number of very high quality (sometimes even as good or better than that of the original show) animations depicting all sorts of things, including original stories, crossovers with video games, interpretations of events from the show, and more.

PMVs

Often animators will set their animations to music. Sometimes music from outside the fandom, and sometimes original music from brony musicians inside the fandom. These animated music videos are referred to by those within the fandom as PMVs, Pony Music Videos

Fully-Animated PMVs

These PMVs are composed primarily of original animation from the MLP fandom. There is some overlap here with the "animated" category above, but I tried to put all the videos where the music is a large part of the focus of the animation in this category.

Mashups & Typography

These are PMVs composed using simple motion graphics and/or carefully selected clips and screenshots from the show or other fan-works. These PMVs are much more common, as they're easier to produce than fully-animated PMVs. Here are a few select stand-outs.

Music

As I mentioned in the previous section, there are a number of artists in the MLP fandom who create original songs inspired by the show. Some of these are remixes of songs from the show, while others are entirely original.
There's lots of pretty amazing stuff here; definitely more than I can cover in this post, so here's a sample of some of my favorites. (I tried my best to cram these into just a few major categories, so sorry if the genres don't fit perfectly in all cases here. I'm open to suggestions if you've got any ideas on how to categorize these better.)

Pop (sort of)

Metal

Mashups & Remixes

Classical

Instrumentals

Musical artists

Here are a few of my favorite musical artists in the fandom, some of whom are responsible for the songs mentioned in the section above.

Analysts & Theorycrafters

Some members of the fandom find it fun to critique episodes of the show, or to spend time coming up with theories and headcanons explaining details about the world of Equestria which are not fully explored in the show itself. Here are a few of the more popular ones (including a small sample of some of their best works).

Blind Commentators

Want to relive the joy of seeing the show for the first time? Want to hear what others thought of an episode? A number of people have recorded themselves watching MLP (and related fan works) for the first time (i.e. "blind"), and sharing their thoughts with you as they watch.

Art

There's really so much great content in this category that I can't even begin to compile a comprehensive list of "the best". Below is a small sample of artwork the fandom has created. Beyond that, I suggest you check out what's on DeviantArt and branch out from there. I also have my own collections of my favorite artwork of canon and non-canon characters on DeviantArt which you're free to check out.

Comics

Some of the artists in the community have used their skills to create comics about the show. Some of these are random silliness and gags, while others feature original stories.

Character Blogs

These are basically blogs where the featured characters respond to questions from the readers. Try a few, you'll get the idea.

Longform Story Comics

Shorts

Fanfictions

And of course, like just about every other fandom in existence, MLP has a number of fanfictions written about it. I personally haven't explored this area of the fandom too much, but here are a few works others have frequently recommended to me. For discovering more stories, FIMFiction.net is a good resource, along with some of the reviewer sites and groups out there like Seattle's Angels and the Royal Canterlot Library. Better yet, if you want an actual, physical copy of some of these, Ministry Of Image has quite the collection!

Games

A number of creators have teamed up to create full fledged video games based on the show. For discovering more games and mods, right now Equestria Daily is probably your best bet. Remember, most of these require Flash Players, and those won't be available for much longer.

Mods

Fansites

Trying to find more awesome pony content? Looking to talk with other bronies? There are all sorts of places on the web for that!

Parodies

Some animators have created parodies of the original show. Lots of random humor and crazy shenanigans here. If you've ever seen any fan-created "abridged series" of other shows, you should a pretty good idea of what these are.
Note that some of the videos in these series may include strong language and mature humor, so be warned.

Memes and Culture

There are a are number of popular memes in the fandom. I don't necessarily consider these to be "top quality" animations or photos (though some of them are pretty funny), but nonetheless they're important to understand in that they give you context for understanding cultural references and inside jokes in the fandom.

Background Ponies

Throughout many episodes in the show you'll often see random ponies placed in the background for the purposes of filling out a crowd or livening up the town. They're basically nameless "extras". Except, thanks to the fandom, they're actually not nameless. In fact, most of these random ponies have names and backstories given to them by the MLP fandom. Here are a few of the more well-known background Ponies:

[1] Ilan Pappe notes that the villagers had no proper arms, only for hunting purposes and people who served in the police; without Arab troops that were absent they stood no chance [2] In April 1948, the Intelligence of the Hagana defined men as anyone above the age of 10

PART 2 & 3 CONTINUED IN COMMENT SECTION BELOW
submitted by invalidusermyass to Palestine [link] [comments]

the_oa What makes you incredible is that you have traveled outside this coma that we're all in.

I. Foreword

I haven't consulted the_oa theories since august last. I hope I'm not repeating anyone already. I had begun writing a ten-part explanation to my theory, but tbh, I'm exhausted. I just want OUT. besides, the series was never intended to be resolved by one single person. it's made to be a group effort. "Critique improves the work"
What follows is a crude, typo-riddled summary of the main points I was going to included in my full theory. My full theory was a pretty thing with headers, pictures, and footnotes...but you know what? Pretty burned me out. I've been slaving at it for 6 months, and I am still on part 4/10. There really is no beginning and end to the_oa. It's what makes it a beautiful piece of art. Explaining it is a whole other thing, and I've always been one to think that explanation destroys the art...
You will notice that I quote Ursula K. Leguin and J.R.R. Tolkien a lot. Leguin was a sci-fi and fantasy writer. Her work is heavily influenced by the tao, a philosophy of embracing the unknown/darkness, which I believe the_oa to have been influenced by too (or by a similar non-dogmatic philosophy). I don't know the tao, but I do know Leguin, so I will be treading that path with my hand in hers. As for Tolkien, he was a linguist, and Thought a lot about the stories in languages and the language of stories, which is fundamentally what I believe this show to be about.

Note: I am currently rummaging through my notes to add my sources, and clarify some points with examples. Ultimately, I will make another post for side-notes, but I hope to gather the gist of it in one single master post.

SPOILER ALERT: needless to say, if you haven't yet watched the show, don't read what follows the end of this sentence.

II. In A Nutshell

I believe Prairie is an unreliable narrator mythologizing her story to work through trauma on her own terms.
The_oa basically takes the themes and the twist ending of Life of Pi and makes the story better. It is the story about the power of stories that takes the audience for a ride by making them part of it.
Now, on to my (very much abridged, though it may not look it) explanation.

III. The Theory of Everything

A. How Not To Get Lost: Know Your Surroundings

The first thing you have to understand of Brit and Zal is that see themselves as storytellers. They aren't here for the showbiz, they are honers of a craft. They don't draw a distinction between Literature and cinema (Zal even likens tv shows in the age of Netflix to novels, 'longform'), safe that films are better than novels in that they are collective works (see: i, ii). In other words, Brit and Zal consider their works to be Art with a capital A, and to understand the_OA, you have to treat it as such.
Here is the breakdown of one particular video in which the interviewer does an excellent job of picking their brains. Later, I hope, you will come to see why it's important to understand how they approach cinema:
"It better be an idea that can sustain you for that period of time, which is good news 'cause hopefully you're not putting, like, these crappy superficial ideas out into the world. Hopefully you've found something that actually has something to say." 20.40
Note: In the rest of this post, except for a study on purple, I mostly compare the_oa to Literature, but it should be noted that its other parent is painting. Paintings allow you to enter them in whichever order you like, and analyze them from whatever distance pleases you, in great detail or broad strokes; so does the_oa. I am sure an entire study could be made on the visual elements of the show (line, shape, color, pattern, texture, form). I hope someone does one.
"We were interested in the idea of, sort of, the mundane taking an ethereal quality. Sort of how I what I was talking about the green carpetings, and the white walls, and how grossly mundane that is -- but what if that becomes sort of the spiritual-- playground." "--Experience" 17.06
u/AKANails sums it up pretty beautifully when speaking of Khatun's aesthetic:
I think it's pretty great that a character so clearly coded as being all cosmic and mystical and whatnot is wearing something as prosaic as a graphic tee. It speaks to the mashup of old and new ideas that I think is an important part of the show's whole ethos.
"It's a lot of hocus pocus, because it's actually really all about stories. Those are all just story beats, like 'needing somebody'" 12.14."
"It's the idea of surrendered to something bigger than you are, like, as an actor, you're in your own kind of cult. Everytime we make a film we're in a cult, and we enter cult together. And there are rules to it: you go out, you wear this, you show up at this time, you leave at this time, and the higher power for everyone is the story -- we all are just in agreement that the higher power is the story, and we're surrendering to it everyday, and we're just doing the best we can to, like, make it happen. [...] There's this desire to believe in, like, something impossible or extraordinary existing in a totally mundane place."17.36

B. The Map Is Not the Territory, the Word Is Not the Thing

The_oa not only emulates fairytales, it is*** writt***e***n like on*e, employing storytelling techniques, like leitmotivs (repeating patterns) and mise en abimes (stories within stories). There are so many repetitions in the show that it could be said that its leitmotiv is repetition itself. And with OA who keeps saying that her story has no end - as *is *Peter Pan's, aka The Never Ending Story! , and Homer's, and with the Netflix formula being being made to be viewed again and again, The_OA operates in circular temporality, giving way to a rather interesting and tragic reflection about how catastrophes repeat themselves again and again throughout History.
And with its Russian nesting dolls, the Scheherazade-esque storytelling, the trickster character (Khatun, Hap and the therapist), and the references to authors such as,
it is clear that is a work of metafiction. It is self-aware.
For those who have not encountered metafiction before, in short,
Metafiction is a form of literature that emphasizes its own constructedness in a way that continually reminds the reader to be aware that they are reading or viewing a fictional work. Metafiction is self-conscious about language, literary form, storytelling, and directly or indirectly draw attention to their status as artefacts. ... [It considers language] an "independent, self-contained system which generates its own 'meanings.'"[10] and a means of mediating knowledge of the world. Thus, literary fiction, which constructs worlds through language, [becomes] a model for the construction of 'reality' rather than a reflection of it. Reality itself became regarded as a construct instead of an objective truth. Through its formal self-exploration, metafiction thus became the device that explores the question of how human beings construct their experience of the world. -- Metafiction, Wikipedia.

For more explanations on how I came to see the_oa as a work of metafiction, see this tiny thread I have started to weave on the subject.*

Moving on, the_oa is a matryoshka doll made of at least three nesting dolls, 'dimensions' placed one on top of the other: the smallest being the story of what really happened to Prairie, the average one being what Prairie tells to the children and her therapist, and the largest being what you tell yourself to try to make sense of this bizarre show. In other words, the_OA doesn`t end where the credits stop, the audience is part of the story as well.
"Lab rats are only powerless because they don't understand that they're in an experiment. But they're just as much a part of it as the scientist, in some ways even more. See, we could take it over. His experiment is our way out. "
In literary works, you'll often find a line that was thrown in to subtly instruct the reader how to understand the work. I call these 'stage directions'. The OA is LITERED with them. The most glaring being the one above. Another subliminal message is when Nina's therapist explains that her father is diluting the truth to protect her innocence. Another is when BBA wonders aloud why we have this compulsion to know everything, climb out of the dark.
It would be fatal to mistake the_OA for a harmless, straightforward story. DO NOT LET IT FOOL YOU. It will try to lull you into forgetting that you're watching a work a fiction with its Truman show-esque product placement, the appearing of the title only at the start of OA's story, etc. That's how stories eat you up. By making you forget you're in one. Don't be fooled by the presence of YouTube, Olive Garden, Patagonia, Applebees, Cosco, Stranger Things playing in the background and AAA cards in the show. These are just baits to keep you under the spell, so you forget that Crestwood is an ersatz suburb. Steve, French, Buck, BBA and Jesse don't exist any more than Prairie, Hap and the other four prisoners.
It is self-aware, just as Hap's prisoners come to be. Two of its central theme are truth blurred by erroneous perceptions and** the insatiable quest for knowledge instead of accepting the unknow**n, in other words: blindness, light ('enlightenment') and darkness. The show explores theses themes:
-- literally, with the character who becomes blind, then finds the sight and acquires gifts of clairvoyance;
-- metaphorically, through the character of the knowledge thirsty scientist, and also through the coming-of-age story of the Crestwood 5, and
-- stylistically, by playing with storytelling techniques, such as ambiguity, the narrator-character, misleading inferences, and other techniques that make the narration unreliable.
On that third point, I would say this: the show wants us to notice the seams, the faults in the narration. It wants us to doubt the reliability of the narrator, to notice her slips. This is what Buck does when he doubts that the letter mission would ever have worked without getting caught by Hap; this is what Prairie does when she interrupts Homer to ask him how he can be sure his kid is a boy.
Any accidentally-on-purpose inconsistency error I consider akin to the effect the falling spotlight has on Truman, which is to draw attention on the artifice of the world we're in. I discuss this further in conversation with u/leO-A, and again here when they point out the cameraman in the reflection, which is not unlike this selfie Zal took of himself -- and for a small thread on how their instagram posts (and possiply Stranger Things) are an extension of the experience, that's here.
u/mrjoejon also offered a clue that concords well with my theory that the show wants the audience to become aware of the artifice of the worlds created both by Prairie, and Brit and Zal.
Brit and Zal don't make it job easy for us, though. Storytelling is an Art of trickery and seduction after all, the true triumph of a storyteller is measured by their ability to captivate the audience without them being aware of it. That's why they divert our attention (just as Steve and Homer cut off Buck and Prairie) by creating an ersatz suburb worthy of the Truman show and laying false leads meant to throw us off. The show exploits the audience's suspension of disbelief to make them fall into the trap of their own confirmation bias. Turns inference into a blind faith. This is what metafiction is.
I've told you about the shows not-so-secret product placement. Next, I will show you the other literary devices it uses to remind the audience that it is a fictional work. In a later post, perhaps, I will go on about its faerytale pastiches, the symmetry between the stories, and the emblematic figure of the storyteller-god-jail-keeper. But for now, however, consider only this: Hap's cells are not the only prisons in the show. "Prison is a state of mind." The references to comas, nesting dolls, aquariums and windows that enclose and frame (like a painting, like this painting) invite the audience to call into question the status of the show as an object that imprisons the mind (if only momentarily), and OA/Brit Marling's status as a writer and active participant to the story (a meta art concept which I only know realize actually was on their mind). EXHIBIT A.

C. The Unreliable Narrator

That the_oa is self-aware tells us that the environment is controlled, and not to trust it.
Point of view is everything to stories, and its everything to the_oa. Perception (and false perceptions reinforced by our convictions) is how it hinges on the frontier of Dream and Reality without ever crossing it. There are a lot of incoherences, ommisions, mistakes in prairies stories, many of which have already been pointed out here ('WHERE DO THEY PEE' is my favorite, because its very telling: in western storytelling, defecation is the first thing that gets left out of a story), and yet the characters and the audience make huge inferences from small, inconclusive proofs in a act of blind faith. a big theme to the show is blindness.
DO NOT TRUST WHAT PRAIRIE TELLS YOU. a lot of what is 'shown' in the episode is hearsay, images merely conjured by the sound of Prairie's voice. Do not treat the words of Prairie for the words of God, for they are neither consistent nor reliable. The 'continuity errors' people keep finding in the show are not proof of multiple dimensions - they are mistakes made by Prairie placed there on purpose by Brit and Zal to remind us that we are being told a story. If there are parallels between the "Crestwood",* "Voi" and "Angel Hunter" (how I distinguish the Russian doll arcs from one another - 'the_oa' being the largest of all the dolls), it's because OA is pulling from reality, and Cre*stwood, as I have said before, is also a work of fiction.
(As for the scene of the car crash that occurs in 'Crestwood' after we are told a (sort of) similar story in 'Angel Hunter', it's a fine example how the_oa tricks us into seeing what we want to believe by exploiting our own confirmation bias.)

D. Lies Breathed Through Silver

"just because it isn't real, doesn't mean I didn't feel it"

The only inter-dimensional travel is metaphorical --
though I'll admit, aesthetically, angle shots were filmed to suggest two dimensions intertwined. However, I think this is peripheral to the ultimate point of the story; contrarily to what Prairie tells the Crestwood 5, I do not think there is a literal inter-dimensional space travel adventure going on more on that here --
the_oa is all about taking a leap of faith in a story, aka surrendering to secondary belief -- see Tolkien who as a linguist and fantasy writer, had lots to say on the healing powers of fiction aka TRANSCENDENCE.
Don't be hard on prairie for not telling the truth. She never said she was. She categorically refused to be interviewed by the reporter. Prairie wants the healing properties of storytelling without the voyeuristic aspect of a cover story.
Prairie is a narrator, a Poet. In the last episode, we even find out that she's enrolled herself in a creative in a creative writing class. She 'breathes lies through silver'. Her words are flexible, symbolic, filled with double meanings which could mean this or that. To a Poet, words are argilite. To paraphrase Ursula K. Leguin from her essay 'Words are my Matter", the words of a storyteller are empty; they are the container, not the substance.
So she turns to fantasy and science fiction, genres denigrated for being escapist, and admired for that same reason. To Tolkien, there was nothing vile about trying to escape. To a prisoner, for example, it was a sign of resistance. And that's exactly what Prairie was, and does. She mixes reality with surreality to make the truth more bearable. This is what kidnapped people learn to do: they learn not to make their minds become prisons too (trigger warning: a victim's testimony) .

"I didn't lie!" writes Homer, "I just created fiction with my mouth."

I am convinced that Prairie, as well as Brit and Zal, sincerely expect the audience to be able to discern that OA is a storyteller. From the start, we are warned that Prairie expresses herself with lyricism ("I didn't disappear. I was present for all of it"). & Given the appearance of BBA, Jesse, French and Buck, it is clear that she isn't being literal when she tells Steve that she is looking for strong, flexible and brave people like him. She is looking for people with a malleable faith, who will know to transcend a metaphor. "Open Your Mind". She is looking for people who are a little broken, fragile, in search of meaning**. People who, like her, will use fiction to give their lives a bit of consisten**cy.* Mo*re here on the utility of metaphors, magical realism, and why the_oa is not pure sci-fi but a commentary on the necessity of "lies breathed through silver"
Nonetheless, as I scroll through the most fundamentalist reddit theories, I am struck by what The_OA has managed to accomplish: make a bunch of atheists experience religion.

“Oh, how wonderful! How like thought! How like the mind it is!” -- Helen Keller, on dancing for the first time.

The_oa is about the transformative power of stories.
The movements and the music score "with strength, flexibility and bravery" are a metaphor of that. (I can't read music, but I bet you this piece has 5 musical movements)!!).
I've often wondered why drum beats and hakas make me so emotional, even without knowing the words. In that last seen when they dance, even after finding out Prairie was a "fraud", I figured it out. It’s the being together - no, the coming together: the fact that it is orchestrated, shared. This s the invisible river "that takes you away" OA speaks of, this is the fondness Brit and Zal have for collective works. Even after the Crestwood 5 no longer believed in the story, they believed in what it gave them.
"Never trust the storyteller. Only trust the story," as [Neil Gaiman] (https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/1037373-never-trust-the-storyteller-only-trust-the-story) put it.
The last dance sequence speaks a lot to what OA has accomplished as a storyteller. In just a few days, she's managed to make 5 people (plus a whole audience) believe that a group dance could save their lives.
She started slowly, skillfully, warming us up to improbable, but believable truths, then turned up the heat with wackier twists. I was born in Russia in 1987 in a family of oligarchs. My father was chased by the Russian mafia. I survived a drowning took my sight. I have an Arabian guardian angel. I was sent to a school for blind children in America. Nancy and Abel adopted me by chance. I rebelled, I ran away. I got kidnapped. People who survive imminent death come back with talents. My captor was a scientist who wanted to uncover the truth of the afterlife. I can see. I'm an angel. I am the original angel. With two dance moves, I can heal a sick person. With five, I can go through space-time.
Do you see what she is doing here? As she gets us used to a "new normal", Prairie tests a little further our ability to suspend disbelief. it's the allegory of the frog: if a frog is put suddenly into boiling water, it will jump out, but if the frog is put in tepid water which is then brought to a boil slowly, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death. it's a storytelling technique used to get you to momentarily confuse fictional reality with real life, what Tolkien calls the Primary World. Give her a few more days, and Prairie would have made you swear that the sun in the sky was green.
For my part, I became so invested in OA story, that by the time she announced to her parents that she was the Original Angel, it was the slap she got from her mother that I found exaggerated, not the yarn Prairie told.
It's a symbol. You must remember here that Brit and Zal write films like one writes Literature, and that every artistic decision that goes into it, not just the dialogue, is filled with symbolism.
As you know, blue, red and purple are always present during important scenes. For a long time, I wondered why colors would be of such significance to a girl who, for the longest time, could not seem them. She couldn't have given them symbolic value, could she? And then after I remembered a story in which color had been explained to a blind person using with music partitions, and I suddenly remembered that hot and cold were often found in dialogues."You taste like cold water." "I like cold things in the cold." "I can not keep warm." "Become colder than it is."
Red is a warm color; blue is a cold color. And mauve? What is mauve? Mauve is in between, it's a transition color. A fork in the road.
If the show is about anything, it's about transitions- transitioning from one dimension to another, transitioning from childhood to adulthood, transitioning from captivity to a 'normal' life, transitioning from one gender to another, transitioning from being a bully to a better person. There are even two characters who embody transition: Khatun, the spiritual guide and Elias, therapist. Beyond their common arabian background, they parallel one another in that they are neither good nor bad,* they are simply there to help with the transitio*n.
Many viewers are torn whether to trust them or not. Just as they are torn whether to trust Prairie's story or not. Good or bad, truth or lie, I think that's besides the point of a trickster -- for that is what Khatun and storytellers are, tricksters. Of course OA isn't being literal. These characters, this show, are not meant to be straightforward. It is ambiguous on purpose. A story can move you, but once it has brought you somewhere, its part is done. It expects you to think for yourself. It expects you, not to trust them, but to learn from them.
[Edit: for further interpretations of the significance of purple, see here].

before I tell you what I think really happen, you should know that it's gruesome. Look up 'true stories' by Margaret atwood. Do you still 'need' to know the true story?

Here we go.

E. The Real and the Unreal

"it would hurt me to hurt you and it would hurt you".
at first, we are led to believe that what Prairie is afraid of telling her parents is that she ran away, but we later find out she always thought her parents knew that. What then, is she afraid to tell them?
HAP: Rituals. Mutulations.
LEON: Attempts to explain existence to control pain.
I believe that a lot of the 'true story' has been distilled in layers of fiction, that Prairie embellishes/ommits parts of her story as she goes along, and that often, the sounds in the show (as hinted by the creators, and also I believe, the character of Khatun with the phonetic language on her face (braille) reminiscent of the cuneiform writing Enheduanna wrote in) are more trustworthy than the image (again, a theme of the show is blindness):
& I think Scott is a self-insert of herself, her darkest thoughts. hap says he left her on the street just as he found her, it's quite possible she was homeless on the streets of NYC when he kidnapped her.
I also think the reason why renata and Rachel have dead plants in their cells it's because they are the only two other 'real' people who were locked up in the basement with her. (which corroborates with what prairie said to her parents -- to whom I believe she'd be telling the truth as they are not flexible in that they cannot bend to fiction -- that there were three of them.
The black policeman in the first episode is the only to have guessed what is really going on with prairie. she has Stockholm syndrome and wants to go back to her captor.
this is why season 1 uses the illiad instead of the odyssey. prairie will only return home when she returns to her captor.
this is also why I believe that the reason why there are parallels (like the scratch on the forehead) between homer, french, and hap, is that HOMER IS HAP.
Hear me out.
The reason why I think Homer is Hap is partially because French sees himself in Homer. French is the athlete, like homer, but he also has a dark side which is alluded to - the drugs he consumes, his extensive knowledge of scopolamine, the drug hap uses, that weird conversation he has with his little brother...
And while every member of the Crestwood 5 came back with a cheerful teaching from OA's story to apply to their lives -- Steve strives to become a better person, Jessie finds solace in the idea that his mother could be an angel, BBA learns to stand up for herself, Buck finds friends -- French acts with the sheepishness of someone with a guilty conscious:
« Even Hap was young at some point. Like a doctor in some ER. And before that, he was a kid in a medical school somewhere. And before that, probably played in the high school band. What if... I don't know...we change? »
Other clues that make me sure of this: for one, the identity of Homer, the Greek Poet, is uncertain - just as our Homer is made to be ("I'm scared, Homer. There are moments when I think I made you up"). He is meant to be elusive and not as straighforward as we think. For another thing, the dualistic nature of the name Hunter Aloysius Percy aka Hap as discussed here leads me to think that OA's captor would have a good and dark side, hence my theory of stockholm syndrome.
As for why Prairie's captor was split in two, I think splitting her lovehunter into two characters was the only way OA could bring herself to tell her story.
"Sky is so big, trees... and a road... going somewhere. And I think of Homer and I grab on to him. And he kicks me away. And he's in the car and he's so... fast. I run to get him... I can't catch him... I... really run so hard but I can't catch him, and I scream "Come back!"
Prairie gives herself away in this scene, mixing Homer for Hap.
I don't know if this was on purpose by the creators, but because language is an important part to how stories are told and because the_oa is very symbolic -- I watched the oa with french subtitles, and in that very scene, prairie yells 'Attendez', not 'attends' - 'attendez' is how you would ask multiple people to wait for you, 'attends' is how you would ask one person to wait for you. yet, there is no one in the car except for hap.
(sure, 'attendez' is also the formal way of saying wait to someone, but in the rest of the show, oa always 'tutoies' hap, so there!)
& I think that if in next season, we meet hap, he will bear the face and the name of Homer, since there is youtube proof of someone by that name.

IV. Last thoughts

"The unknown, the unforetold, the unproven, that is what life is based on. Ignorance is the ground of thought. Unproof is the ground of action. If it were proven that there is no God there would be no religion. But also if it were proven that there is a God, there would be no religion. Tell me, Genry, what is known? What is sure, unpredictable, inevitable -- the one certain thing you know concerning your future, and mine?"
"That we shall die."
"Yes, There's really only one question that can be answered, Genry, and we already know the answer. ... The only thing that makes life possible is permanent, intolerable uncertainty: not knowing what comes next.” --Ursula K. Leguin, The Left Hand of Darkness.
The fact of the matter is that season 2 will not give the answers you are hoping to find. As I said previously, the shows aesthetic hinges on Dream and Reality. The lines are blurred at times, but never crossed. Season 2 will not be an interdimensional space travel adventure, of that I am sure. That is simply not the tone the first season sets out with. Its tone is ambiguity, the great unknown. Embrace it.
I think the inconsistency errors are fun collectibles to look for if you have time to kill, but that is not what the show is about. Think of it. Which story is more profound: the story that is a beautiful allegory you can apply to your own life, or the story that is strictly about proving imaginary science?
This is why I lean towards a literary interpretation of the show rather than a literal interpretation. The former has a multiplicity of levels 'dimensions' -- allegorical, moral, analogical and literal -- that a strict reading of the text could never encompass.
(In fact, you're turning in circles if you spend all your time looking for the answers within the parameters of the maze. “A rat in a maze is free to go anywhere, as long as it stays inside the maze.” To get out, you must turn to the Maker's hand, and the hand that made them.)
There are so much more nuances and examples I would like to add, so much to say as to how this series is a beautiful homage to oral storytelling, language and the anatomy of a fairytale . I would like to go deeper into the parallels between storyteller-god-jail-keeper, and the notion of circularity - as opposed to the western view of the world in binaries, namely that things have beginnings and ends - which has never been forgotten in indigenous and east Asian philosophies, and so much more that could be filled in a Literary class, and perhaps will, someday.
I know this doesn`t explain how she got her sight -- but I like to think it's a sign that miracles can still happen in this mean world. I also think its a reminder that this is a work of metafiction, and that to understand the series, one must never forget the rat maze they put themselves in when they enter a story.
Once I figure out how formatting works on this site, I will try to add to all the sources I used - including you, fellow reddit theorists!! (Update: still working on it!!)

V. Notes

The first known poet in history, Enheduanna, was an Iraqi woman. She wrote about Inanna on tablets in the cuneiform language. The interesting thing about her is that she had a position or title. It was “The keeper of the flame.” I think that if a poet should have any role at all, it should be (wherever and whenever) the same: “keeper of the flame.” --Dunya Mikhail, poet.

VI.Appendix

Brit and Zal, if I am right, give me a sign; a song or two, or a star, if nothing else. You know which one.
